SCI Action Canada Members Take Part in the Paralympic Torch Relay

On Friday March 5th, 2010, the Paralympic Torch Relay visited the City of Toronto. SCI Action Canada was well represented at the event. Rich VanderWal (Community Advisory Board) and Amy Latimer (Research Advisory Board) had the distinct honour of carrying the torch. ParaSport Ontario (Community Partner) had sledge hockey demonstrations running throughout the day.
The day was a celebration of the Paralympic ideals - mind, body, and spirit. The 40 torchbearers included accomplished Paralympic athletes, Paralympic enthusiasts, and dedicated volunteers. Each torchbearer wheeled, walked, ran, or even inline-skated a 140m leg of the relay around Toronto's Nathan Phillips Square.
The theme of the day was from Spark-to-Flame. Torchbearers and onlookers were encouraged to use their passion for active living and accessibility as a spark to fuel initiatives that promote awareness and physical activity opportunities for people with disability.
Interestingly, this theme captures the objective of many of the ongoing initiatives of SCI Action Canada. We, at SCI Action Canada, are committed to creating resources and programs that spark the SCI community to become more physically active.

Paralympic torch bearer and SCI Action Canada Community Advisory Board member Rich VanderWal passes the Olympic flame to Research Advisory Board member Amy Latimer.
